FAQs for Pipes & Tubes

The best way to determine whether a pipe or tube is needed for your job is to first identify its intended use.

A pipe is most commonly used for the transportation of fluid and gases and is constructed to withstand high pressures. Whereas a tube is generally used for structural or mechanical purposes.

A pipe is always round and is sized in Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) or Nominal Diameter (DS). A tube can be round, but can also be rectangular, squared or oval and is sized in inches and millimeters.

Pipes are always measured by inside diameter, whereas a tube is measured by the outside diameter and wall thickness.

Tubes have a tight tolerance in diameter, whereas a pipe's diameter never changes.

Stainless Steel Pipe is used in a range of industries due to its high resistance to corrosion and chemicals. It also has a very high pressure and temperature resistance. Some examples of how stainless steel pipe and tube are used in industry include:

  • Transporting corrosive chemicals and fluids in the Petrochemical Indusrty
  • Structural applications like handrails and supports in construction
  • Hygienic applications in food and beverage production, including food processing equipment, dairy processing, and brewing
  • Preserves water quality in Water and Wastewater Treatment processes due to its corrosion resistance
  • High-temperature and corrosion-resistant applications in power plants, such as heat exchangers and boiler tubes.
  • For manufacturing medical instruments and equipment, due to their easy sterilisation.

Copper pipe and tube has several key properties that make them a popular choice in various applications.

They have excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, making copper piping ideal for heating and cooling systems and electrical wiring and components. Copper pipes are highly resistant to corrosion, especially when exposed to water and oxygen, and are resistant to bacterial growth, making them a hygienic choice for water distribution systems.

Copper is 100% recyclable also making it an environmentally friendly material.

Seamless pipe is produced from a solid billet of metal that is heated then rolled or extruded into a pipe shape; they have no seams or joints, resulting in a uniform and continuous structure. This is advantageous as it makes these pipes more resistant to high pressure ratings, improves fluid flow and allows for better bending and forming.

Welded Pipe is made by joining two edges of a flat metal sheet or plate together through a welding process creating a visible seam or weld line where the edges are joined. Welded pipes are usually more economical to manufacture and available in a wider range of sizes and lengths.

Our automated bandsaw can cut pipe, tube, bars, beams and angles up to 420mm in size, and thread any of our pipe material from ¼” up to 6” in BSPT & NPT threads. This allow you to tailor any of our products to specific lengths, saving on labour costs, delays and excess waste material.
